Do you have stubborn or coarse textured hair? If so, here are a couple of tips to help you manage your mane. Adding color to coarse textured hair will soften the hair shaft, therefore making your hair much more manageable. However, if you don’t want to add hair color to your list of maintenance, then you can follow the collection of LoK products I have used in my featured client, Julie. After shampooing and conditioning Julie with LoK Hydrasurge, I applied mid-shaft to ends the following three products: Volumizing Mousse, Glossing Serum, and last, yet still very important, Heatshield. Round brush your hair and touch up with flat iron if needed.

Hello everyone! Cammi Merriam here, founder and artistic director of LoK products. Today’s blog features a client of mine with a difficult yet common challenge with her hair. Tamera has a coarse texture to her hair and would like to wear a style that is straighter with some movement to it. To jump start this process I performed a keratin treatment on Tamera. This treatment alone was not enough to achieve the results we were looking for, however once I added LoK color protection serum and a generous amount ( approx. 7 pumps) of heat shield we got exactly what we were looking for! See for yourself!

People from all walks of life fight this annoying condition every day. However, there are some people who are more likely to suffer frizzy hair than others. First, some people inherit coarse hair from their parents. In short, their hair simply isn’t as naturally smooth and full bodied as others. The second group of individuals who are prone to frizzy hair are those living in a humid environment. Humidity can cause severe hair nightmares.

Manage Frizzy Hair
The first step to fighting frizzy hair begins with daily management. There are many things you can do right now to manage frizzy hair. First, stop being so rough when towel drying your hair. The friction from the towel causes damage to the hair follicles. Also, excessive use of heating products (blow dryers, curling irons, straighteners) removes natural oils from your hair. This prevents your hair from remaining moisturized, and it ultimately leads to dry, frizzy hair. In short, be gentle to your hair. Avoid excessive rubbing and exposure to conditions that will dry it out. These simple preventative measures will go a long way to reducing the occurrence of frizzy hair.

If you need help with frizzy hair or those little flyaways, you will love our HeatShield product.

To achieve Mandy’s look use what I call ‘The Combo’, LoK Volumizing Mousse topped with LoK Glossing Serum. Combine products in your hand and apply to mid shaft massaging into roots. Start blow drying your hair with your head upside-down because this will bring mega volume to the root area. Once the roots are about 50 percent dry, bring head upright and blow-dry with round brush focusing on rolling ends under and applying direct heat from blow dryer (this step is easier if you blow dry in sections, front, sides, back). Follow with one last blast from your blow dryer with your head upside down. Finish off this great style with LoK hairspray for ultimate shine and hold!

If you like to back comb, or tease as most people call it, spray a small amount of Lok Dry Shampoo at the roots of your hair in the area you want to back comb. This will give your hair the added texture needed for a strong holding back comb. Smooth over the top with a bristle brush and spray.
Now that you know how to back comb, it is important to know how to get it out as breakage can and often does occur when trying to brush your back combing out. It’s best to just shampoo it out, however if you want to skip a day or two of shampooing, once again, grab your can of Lok Dry Shampoo and spray it at the root and lightly mist over the top, then gently brush out. It is best to use a Mason Pearson brush (can be found online), or a Marilyn brush (found at most beauty supply stores).

I cannot stress the importance of the advice I’m going to give you in this blog!

First you most know that there are few chemicals that can breakdown hair. Chlorine is one of them. Other than a swim cap, there isn’t anything that can completely protect your hair. However there are a couple of simple steps that will help tremendously. The first step is this, ALWAYS completely soak your hair and don’t wring it out with a hose or shower before entering the pool. Never get in the pool with dry hair. The reason for this is that the hair is like a sponge, if you completely fill it up with water it will not be able to absorb as much of the chlorinated water.

The second step and equally as important, is that when you get out of the pool you MUST rinse your hair. NEVER let chlorinated water dry into your hair! Mommies teach your kids these 2 simple steps. Letting your kids’ hair become chlorinated will lead to tears in the future when trying to comb out tangled chlorinated hair. These steps apply to salt pools as well.

Let me know if you notice a difference this summer in yours or your child’s hair. I’d love to hear your feedback!

Kelly loves her hair to be a beautiful, vibrant shade of red, and is always willing to do whatever it takes to maintain the integrity of her color”, says Lok founder Cammi Merriam. “Part of Kelly’s regimen is to alternate Lok Hydrasurge Shampoo and Conditioner with the Lok Dry Shampoo. When Kelly tries to credit me for the longevity of her color, I give the credit right back to her and her diligence with the LoK Color Protection Collection. Actually 95% of my clients come to me for color service to their hair and they all get the same lecture…. Replace as many washings as you can with Lok Dry Shampoo and always apply the LoK Post Shower Color Sealant on the days you do wash your hair. And don’t forget to wear a hat if you’re going to be in the sun. My color line and services can only be so good, the rest is up to my clients.”

And you need to just start over but you know brushing through already hair-sprayed hair is a big no-no. Well, if you pick up a can of Lok Color Protection Dry Shampoo and lightly spray your already hair-sprayed hair it will brush right out! Try this little experiment: Spray the palm of your hand with hairspray and let it dry. Then spray your hand with LoK’s Dry Shampoo. (It is important to note that this will not work with most dry shampoos as they are powder based). If you are using Lok Dry Shampoo in this experiment your hand should become soft again and no longer sticky! Hopefully you never need to use this handy little trick but when you do you’ll be amazed at how well this works!

I wanted to share with you a helpful hint regarding your LoK Color Protection Dry Shampoo.

Ready to use the dry shampoo? Shake it up … yep, before you use it you need to shake it like a can of spray paint. Whenever you reach for your can of dry shampoo, shake the can until you hear the ball rattle in the can. Sometimes this can take up to 30 seconds or more. This will keep you from releasing the can’s propellant prematurely and wasting the remaining product. So… shake it! Shake it! And when you hear the ball, spray and play! And as always, secure your style with LoK Glossing Hairspray.

When putting your hair into a cute sexy ponytail, a fun twist up the back, or even a little something pinned over to the side, dirty hair, or second day hair, as i like to call it, is much easier to work with. The natural oils from your scalp help keep hairpins and ponytail holders secure and flyaway hair to a minimum. If your hair is freshly washed, spray LOK color protection dry shampoo on the roots for added body and control. The same can be done if your hair is too dirty or has a greasy appearance.
Finish off your look with LOK glossing hairspray!
By the way, watch for Cammi’s upcoming vlogs, where she will show you some quick and easy ways to put your hair up.
